The Google Pixel 7a is Google's latest mid-range phone featuring 2 cameras. I'm taking the 7a camera out for a hands-on review to see how it performs. By taking portraits and cityscapes I will share with you unedited and edited samples of the 7a Ultrawide Camera, Wide Camera and 2x Zoom. I also share video samples of the Pixel 7a with both the rear and front cameras, plus share a sample of the microphone quality. Since the Pixel 7a also captures Night Sight photos, I take the camera for test photos of the Sydney Harbour at night to see the quality. Finally, I also have comparison photos between the Pixel 7a vs Pixel 6a vs Pixel 7 to look at between all cameras. PIXEL 7a ULTRAWIDE CAMERA
The Google Pixel 7a features a dedicated Ultrawide camera. This camera has a 120 degree field of view, which is the full frame equivalent of 14mm.
The Ultrawide camera produces 13 megapixel files. Like the Pixel 6a, you can do video with Ultrawide in 4K up to 30 frames per second. Watch my review video to hear my complete thoughts about the performance and final images. I share the JPGs straight out of the Pixel 7A so you can see the internal processing. I also share the unedited RAWs and my edited photos too.
In comparison, the 6A and Pixel 7 both have a 114 degree field of view which is the full frame equivalent of 16mm. The wider view of the 7a is clear when you look at all 3 photos side by side in my review video.
PIXEL 7a WIDE CAMERA
The Google Pixel 7a has a 64 MP Quad Bayer Wide camera, which is the main camera of the phone. This camera uses autofocus with dual pixel phase detection which I found was very responsive while moving around to take photos.
The Wide camera has an 80° field of view which is the full frame equivalent of 25mm. I find this is a very comfortable focal length to shoot a wide variety of photos with, from portraits, to landscapes and cityscapes.
The Pixel 7a has an 80° field of view, compared to the Pixel 6a which has a 77 degree field of view and Pixel 7 with 82 degrees. Each of these focal lengths are very similar to each other. In a real world setting, it's difficult to tell them apart.
One big difference is the 7a captures a 16 megapixel image with the 64 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor. Compared to the 6a sensor and 7 Quad Bayer sensor which both produce a 12 megapixel image.
Pixel 7a VIDEO
The Pixel 7a does video in up to 4K 60. Watch my review video above to see video examples in 4K 60p using the Wide Camera. Standard stabilisation in video mode is fantastic, I was able to walk around while filming and the footage is smooth. We have 4 video stabilisation modes available including Standard for light movement. Locked which is best for filming in 2x zoom or more. Active for filming while moving around and Cinematic Pan.
2X ZOOM
The Pixel 7A does not feature a third camera for 2x zoom or telephoto. Instead, it utilises the same, main wide camera but the quad bayer sensor design allows a high resolution image rather than a digital crop. 2x has the full frame focal length of 51mm.
PIXEL 7A FRONT CAMERA
The Pixel 7a features a 13 megapixel front camera. This camera has fixed focus and features a 95° Ultrawide field of view which is about 21mm in full frame.
In comparison, the Pixel 6a has an 8 megapixel front camera with an 84° wide field of view. The Pixel 7 has a 10.8 megapixel front camera with a 92.8° Ultrawide field of view.
The Google Pixel 7a has the widest Front Camera of all three phones. I personally find this helpful as I usually take selfies while travelling. I want to be able to see as much of the location I'm in as possible!
The Pixel 7a's Front camera does video in up to 40k 30p. Watch my review video above to see examples of video and to hear the quality of the microphone. The 7a features stereo speakers, 2 microphones and noise suppression.
NIGHT SIGHT
The Google Pixel 7a includes 2 new features - Face Unlock and Long Exposure. Long Exposure mode is a fun way to capture creative photos featuring movement. I took sample photos at the Sydney Harbour to share what Long Exposure looks like as well as Night Sight in Ultrawide, Wide and 2x Zoom.
