The Sony A7R4 is a 61MP, full frame mirrorless camera. I am using the Zeiss 50mm f1.4 lens for this portrait photoshoot. It’s been a long time since I’ve done a portrait photoshoot on a 50mm lens. My favourite portrait focal length is a little bit of an unconventional one - the 35mm. But it was nice re-discovering my love for the 50 focal length during this portrait session.

If you have followed my photography journey, you would know that I used to be a full-time Canon shooter and I own the Canon 50mm f1.2. It’s a nice lens but unlike other L-series lenses, it is not tack sharp wide open which I like to shoot at quite often. I tend to use that lens at a minimum of f2 to make sure I am getting in focus, sharp photos which is a little bit frustrating. I have since tried the new RF 50mm f1.2 on the Canon EOS R5 which is a fantastic lens!

One of the things I am most excited to see is how sharp this Zeiss 50mm f1.4 is. Watch my behind the scenes video below to see 100% zoom, SOOC sample images. The photos are incredibly sharp wide open which I am very pleased to see. As it turns out, I was so happy with this lens during this photoshoot that I went and bought one for myself the following day.

During the backlit photos, I did notice some strong PDAF striping over the brighter parts of my image. You can see them more clearly in the unedited shots in my video.
