During this portrait photoshoot, we compare crop frame vs full frame to answer some commonly asked questions. Is crop frame enough for portrait photography? If you are thinking of getting a camera, should you settle for crop frame? Or take the plunge and upgrade to full frame? Do you have extra benefits by upgrading to full frame?

Watch the video below to see the comparison images! I am using the full frame Canon 5Dmk iv vs the crop frame Canon 7D mk2 to compare the differences and similarities. To start off, I am using the Canon 35mm f1.4 II lens on both camera bodies.

For the first comparison, I share the focal length difference on a crop frame to full frame camera using the same lens. If you want to watch a video comparing all my focal lengths on full frame vs crop frame you can watch this! Mahalia and I stood in the same spot and captured a photo using both cameras. I did this with both a closeup headshot image and a full body shot. Unfortunately, I accidentally had the full frame camera aperture set to f2 - sorry about that! Please disregard what the bokeh looks like in the first 2 comparisons. We are solely looking at the crop ratio of full frame to crop frame. The Canon 7D mkii has a crop ratio of 1.6x compared to the full frame.

Next, I shot both the full frame and crop frame camera images look the same. I moved around while shooting to fill the frame and get both cameras to look as similar as possible. In these comparisons, we can see a few differences in the bokeh. You can also see a difference with light rendering, distortion and vignetting.

For the final comparisons, I show you how to make a crop frame camera look the same as a full frame camera with a 35mm prime focal length. On the Canon 5D mkiv I kept on the Canon 35mm f1.4 II lens. On the Canon 7D mk2 crop frame body, I used the Sigma 24mm f1.4 lens. I share portraits I took standing in one spot to share an example of how the 24mm on crop frame can look very similar to a 35mm on full frame.

Watch the behind the scenes video of our portrait photoshoot below. I share my opinions and go into more detail of all the tests we conducted. You can also see SOOC images side by side at 100% crop to see all the details.

I have a whole series of photos and videos comparing prime lenses and focal lengths to each other on both crop frame and full frame cameras. You can check them all out here:
