2019

My year in 100 pictures.

I’ve put together my favourite 100 images I took in 2019 as well as some of my favourite videos I’ve created. To start, this is the first video I uploaded in 2019! I had an older version of this video that I uploaded when I first started my YouTube Channel, but felt like it was time for a refreshed and more detailed version.

I'm so happy to be back now in 2019 with a bunch of fresh video ideas. I hope today video about techniques I use to take sharp photos helps you :) These are techniques I use on my Canon 5D mkiv. Please check out my Lightroom Presets: https://www.digitalfilmactions.com See you next Wednesday!

My first 2 photoshoots of the year!

Hey everyone! I hope you all enjoy todays behind the scenes and find some helpful tips that you can use next time you're photographing in overcast weather. Aside from it being overcast it was also raining pretty much the entire time we were shooting!

The first place I visited in 2019 was Thailand and it was an amazing experience that left me wanting to come back! Dan and I travelled with our friends from Poland and met in Bangkok. From there we spent 3 weeks exploring the cities, mountains and beaches of Thailand - I filmed a vlog and also a creative photoshoot video doing some street photography which was a really fun experience.

So excited to share today's video with you all! We went all over Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phi Phi and Phuket and I shared some behind the scenes on my thoughts of composing travel portraits as well as before & afters of all the photos I took.
All photos edited with my Aspen Lightroom Preset: https://www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets#/new-aspen-lightroom-preset/ Hey everyone! I hope you all enjoy today's street photography video, I had so much fun travelling through Thailand and taking all these photos it's such a beautiful place!

One of my favourite photoshoots and videos I created this year was - surprise! - on a KIT LENS haha which is quite different to the low aperture lenses I usually like to use. But as I mentioned, these turned out to be some of my favourite photos. You can watch the behind the scenes of that photoshoot below.

This has been such a highly requested video from you guys! Today we're doing a portrait photoshoot on the Sony A7III and the Sony 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens.

Dan and I also had the chance to travel to Scotland this year to capture a wedding, we decided to stay for a few extra days to be able to explore the Scottish countryside which I have always wanted to see and definitely didn’t disappoint.

All photos edited with my Mountains Lightroom Preset Pack: https://www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets#/new-mountains-lightroom-preset-pack/ I filmed this vlog on the Sony A7III + took photos on my Canon 5D mkiv. Would love to hear what you guys think in the comments! Scotland is absolutely BEAUTIFUL I loved it so much 💛 -- MUSIC: All the songs in my videos are from Artlist!

I couldn’t miss out on including another favourite creative photoshoot from the year with Kristina and baby goat Ollie!

I'm sooo excited to share this photoshoot with you all with Kristina and baby goat Ollie! Ollie is such a sweetheart and my face hurt from smiling so much while we were taking these photos haha Kristina's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kristinaalice1/ All photos edited with my new Mountains Lightroom Preset Pack: https://www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets#/new-mountains-lightroom-preset-pack/ -- MUSIC: All the songs in my videos are from Artlist!

While we were in Scotland, I had the chance to meet up with some other creatives and take their portraits. I took portraits of Karoline (above) and also Tamar & Matt - behind the scenes of that photoshoot is below!

I hope you all enjoy today's couples portrait session behind the scenes video which we filmed while Dan and I were visiting beautiful Scotland! A massive thank you to Tamar and Matt who were our models for today's photoshoot, please check them out on Instagram (links below) as they are really talented photographers + film makers.

Since we travelled to Scotland for a wedding, Dan and I decided to stop by and spend some time with his family in Gdansk, Poland. From there we decided to take a roadtrip with Karol and his girlfriend to Austria. Just before we left for the roadtrip we filmed a video with Karol about How to Pose Males who are not Models and it’s my first video to hit ONE MILLION views!! Which is absolutely incredible. After Austria, Dan and I took a short flight to Spain to explore the city of Granada. I still haven’t edited the photos from Spain or the videos from Spain and Austria (I am terrible when it comes to personal creative projects) but I’m hoping to edit them early this year if you guys would still like to see that footage!

You guys have been asking me for this video for ages and I'm so excited it's finally here! Here are some tips on how I pose males who are not models for photoshoots - these posing tips are great for general portrait sessions, groom portraits at a wedding, engagement shoots and senior portraits.

We arrived home to Sydney after our trip to Europe in time for my birthday where Dan and I spent the day walking around the Blue Mountains. This is around the time that I joined Google Team Pixel which I am so proud to be a member of! When the Pixel 4 was launched I filmed a review video of the camera and it’s incredible Night Sight capabilities. It was such a fun video to create!

Hey guys, I hope you enjoy today's video and found these image examples helpful! You can see all the high resolution images on my blog: blog.juliatrotti.com Big thank you to my team! Video: https://www.instagram.com/danpodbierezki/ Model: https://www.instagram.com/claudia_herro/ Makeup: https://www.instagram.com/lidija.mua/ Elizabeth: https://www.instagram.com/theexampleau/ And Google for the #pixel4 #giftfromgoogle And don't forget I have another video coming this week on Friday morning Sydney time!

Yet another Blue Mountains highlight was when Kristina, Dan and I took a roadtrip there to take some pictures. At home the air was still but as soon as we got to the mountains the wind picked up and there were incredibly strong gusts of wind pushing us around - we persevered through it and came out with some (in my opinion) really special photos from the day.

I hope you all enjoy our sarcastic Australian humour in today's video 😅 the wind was ridiculous but it ended up being a really fun day! Plus the bonus of we somehow managed to take some nice photos haha Third time lucky in the Blue Mountains for us maybe??

The second half of the year was filled with a plethora of portrait photoshoots, here are 2 of my favourites! Shooting portraits with a slightly unconventional 28mm lens and also a portrait photoshoot at golden hour on Portra film which I scanned myself!

All photos edited with my Disposable Film Lightroom Preset Pack: https://www.digitalfilmactions.com/lightroom-presets#/disposable-film-lightroom-preset/ This lens consistently surprises me! Let me know what you guys think of it and if you use it as well :) My 28mm for travel photography review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-3M5I23-lw&t (and check out any of my travel vlogs on my channel to see some extra footage of what it looks like!)
Photoshoot on the Canon EOS-1 V + Portra 160 & 400 film!

The last video I wanted to include felt right to film at the end of the decade - a photoshoot on my first ever DSLR camera, the Pentax K100D. When I first started photography 11 years ago, I used my family’s point and shoot camera to take some creative photos. After a little while I realised that this was something I really enjoyed doing, so I decided to get my very first DSLR. It served me really well to learn all about photographing, shooting in manual, what kind of photography I liked the most, how to compose, how to work with natural lighting and many more things. I think I used this camera for about 3 years before saving up for my first professional body the Canon 5Dmk2 and have since been using the 5D series for all my work. It was really fun getting to go almost back in time to see how the Pentax performs today! Below is the behind the scenes video to see all the final photos and my thoughts on the experience.

Today I'm revisiting my first ever DSLR camera, the Pentax K100D that I used about 10 years ago to learn all about photography - how to shoot in manual, composition, taking portraits, etc.

2013

it's december and this year has flown by quickly. i'm not sure where to begin with recounting it all, it was a big one for sure. somewhere between lulling sleeps on noisy airplanes, walking through the rain in the sweltering heat and spending quiet moments reminiscing and enjoying the little nothings, i feel like i found myself somewhere along the way. i guess i'll start right at the beginning.

the year started slow. by january i felt overworked and tired & photography had lost it's magic. colours were dull and i had no interest in documenting or creating. i'm still not sure if it was just a random lull in creativity or if something had really gotten under my skin but i am so thankful for my first shoot of the year early february that pulled me right out the water, and i gasped and kicked around feeling so lucky to be breathing again. this is when i met the wonderful lisa fahey and megan emmett. we explored the hills on the beachside and shot in between mountains and crashing waves while the sun turned to honey. it was just what i needed. it reminded me that photography didn't need to be complicated or hard. it was whatever you let it be.

by march, something amazing was brewing and my positivity was having a lovely effect on the world around me. i booked a job to shoot a campaign in london. it was april when dan and i were on a plane photographing clouds and l.a. from above. after more than twenty hours of traveling, we landed in london and began our running around. we spent two amazing weeks there and we instantly fell in love with the place and are always longing to go back.

when we arrived back home, we had more motivation and energy than ever. i was shooting non-stop & dan created i make films and officially started filming alongside me. it's been so lovely to have him by my side this year, when we are together i feel like we can achieve anything. we also launched swoon weddings, which has been growing and slowly blossoming. all our shoots seem to seamlessly flow and we've become in tune with weaving in and around one another without taking our eyes away from the viewfinder.

on top of it all, we have also become very close friends with some of the most amazing people ever through all our shoots and little get together's in between. the friends i made this year are people i will never forget and feel so blessed to have met.

i think it's important after a whole year of hard work, long nights, early mornings, long drives, beautiful sunsets, lovely conversations and probably way too much coffee to just sit back and appreciate everything you've done. this has been my favourite year ever. i've achieved more than i ever thought would be possible and i still feel so much energy and fire burning within me. 2013 was beautiful, and i can't wait to see what adventures next year brings. i already have plans for big shoots and places i'd love to visit. it's all going to happen.

these are some of my favourite moments and photos from this year:

2012

2012 was an amazing year. it is the last day of the year today (only three hours to go until midnight) and i thought nothing would be more fitting if i wrote a blog post about all the wonderful things that have happened in the past twelve months. i've met with more talented and creative people than i can count on two hands, traveled everywhere beautiful, and have grown so much as a person and as a photographer. here is a little list of the things that happened to me:

i started off the year exploring and

traveling melbourne

with dan.

i officially make a living only from photography.

i set out to shoot a

music festival

and ended up shooting

two

.

i am part of the

evoke images

team shooting weddings.

i was

printed

in culture magazine.

i shot for some

pretty

amazing

brands

.

i hosted a

photography workshop

. and taught a few one on one workshops in between.

i went to a

photography meetup

and made lots of new friends.

i thought i would show you some things i got up to this year in pictures as well, after all i'm better at talking with pictures than i am at writing:

i spent a lovely day with kiara rose. she showed me around her forest backyard and we took pictures and sat and talked in the long grass.

i became part of evoke images. a wonderful little team i am so proud to be shooting with! matt and i drove past forest fire burnt landscapes and stopped on the side of the road to get some pictures.

his camera bag vs. my tiny bag!

dan bought a ukulele which he records music for my short films with.

i went on lots of long drives. most of them with dan.

abbey love taking a photo of amelia zadro on one of our shoots. and some more behind the scenes:

the top of the world.

lauren was lovely enough to come along with me to two of my shoots to take behind the scenes pictures. i can't wait to share them with you!

lots of test shooting throughout the year. this is the lovely krystal from ava models.

my cat who jumps on my car the second i get home from shooting weddings in the middle of the night.

some self portraits on rainy christmas day.

bright fish swimming on the pavement.

a moment in between with ellie on our oh deer shoot.

sunsets while exploring.

walking down to the river at shoots and being tempted to swim in the muddy water on heatwave days.

visiting my dad.

a couple daydreaming in the park.

shoots on the side of the road (this is emma sabjan) where police drove past and put their sirens on to scare us. they drove away laughing when we all jumped and screamed.

self portraits by the creek.

outtakes from lookbook shoots.

wise words on the side of the street.

exploring the streets of sydney on shoots.

lunchtime with the lenni vintage team.

we made the street turn red.

blue rocks from smoke bombs.

wrapping up the lenni vintage shoot.

drives to the beach a few days ago.

detours through the countryside.

2013 will be different. simple, i guess. this is what i want to do:

travel somewhere outside of australia.

love more and be kind.

it's a short list i admit, but doing these two things will make me the happiest soul in the world. i guess i will see you all on the other side where i've got lots of new blog posts to make of pretty pictures and short films full of colour and wonder.

have a happy new year everyone! xo
