the great ocean road

the australian coastline is one of my favourite places to be. i have always loved our beautiful beaches, rolling meadows and cliffs with angry waves. in new south wales, dan and i spend most of our time exploring the coast, so while sam and i were visiting melbourne, the great ocean road was something we had to do.

we woke up before the sunrise and walked through the tired-eyed city to get breakfast before heading off on our long drive. the great ocean road is an amazing drive through winding mountains, with roads lining the sea and dwelling through canopies of trees. we stopped at more lookouts and beaches than we could count, walked through one of the oldest forests in victoria, lost our breath while climbing up steep staircases on the side of cliffs, were almost swallowed by the sea while taking pictures on the rocks near the 12 apostles and took a helicopter ride (my first!) to see the amazing view.

this was my second time on the great ocean road, and it's something i would probably do every time i go to visit victoria. there's just something about that place that i love. maybe it's that you get to roadtrip and be constantly surrounded by beautiful landscapes, that the view is ever changing and ever beautiful, when you stop at the top of a mountain and look out you are lost for a minute while taking it all in. maybe it's because every time you go back it will all be a little bit different, or maybe it's just a magical place for me.

either way, these are my photos from our roadtrip through the great ocean road to the 12 apostles.

melbourne

during august, my best friend sam and i made a last minute decision to visit melbourne. we wanted to go on a little adventure, so we bought tickets and headed off. i've been to melbourne twice, so this trip was my third time. after traveling to europe last year, when i explored melbourne this time, it reminded me of a mini london somehow. there was constantly little reminders of that beautiful european city that i kept seeing while strolling the streets of melbourne.

we spent a few days in the city and one day on the great ocean road (that blog post will be coming tomorrow!). we spent every minute walking around and taking pictures, we ate more than we probably should have (there were just too many amazing food choices!), we got lost on the trams, explored all the little streets and laneways, slept too little and got rained on while walking around. it was an amazing trip to say the least, melbourne does it for me every time. it's a beautiful, creative little city and i can't wait for next time!

before the sun had risen, dan and i were driving through heavy rain and thick fog on our way to newcastle to shoot for white magazine's spring issue. we warmed our bones with coffee and chatted the whole way there. a couple of hours into driving (lots of aw-ing and ah-ing at the beautiful landscapes we zoomed past on the way) and we had arrived and our beautiful location for the day - a big garden that has been tended to with what looks like lots of love and care throughout the years. we drove through the big gates and down a little dirt road lined with orange trees.

we walked past the rose gardens and made our way to a cosy cottage where the team was getting ready for our day of shooting. the rest of the day was spent changing into pretty dresses and wandering the gardens, shooting in the countless locations we found along the way. somehow the rain had magically stopped by the time we started shooting and we even had a few minutes of lovely sunlight here and there, something that we weren't expecting or waiting for at all. these are the wonderful people that let this shoot come to life:

autumn, 2014

autumn was spent endlessly shooting. i met up with so many talented photographers to collaborate on creative shoots, i photographed campaigns and lookbooks for brands and designers, and as always, spent time exploring beautiful locations with dan on our days off.

autumn was a busy few months and i didn't ask as many personal photos as i normally do for posts like this. so to make up for it, i've included some of my final photos from my autumn shoot collaboration to fill in the gaps!

i've implemented a new feature in my blog. if you'd like to find out what a particular image was edited with, you can now click on those pictures to be taken to the preset they were edited with! for now only a few images have links, hopefully soon i can release some new presets and all the images will have a reference to how they were colour graded.

summer, 2014

a long overdue post of the months of summer, 2014. this year summer was hot and sticky, with dark clouds sweeping the sky in the afternoon for a night of thunderstorms. we spent our days shooting, roadtripping and planning more shoots. these are the behind the scenes, the skies and the little in betweens of my summer.

sahara mahala | mimi elashiry for alexandra redmond

alexandra redmond's latest collection sahara mahala is based on a tropical island surrounded by sand dunes, leafy palms, cool breezes and radiant suns. it was only fitting we photographed the campaign photos in a desert oasis, finishing the day off running through the waves crashing on the shoreline.

i had such a lovely afternoon meeting these two sisters and working with them for the first time. we photographed through lightening storms, got photo-bombed by late afternoon swimmers, and had rain drops clouding my lens. i think it was all worth it though, i can't wait to shoot with them again soon!

we spent yesterday afternoon chasing the sunlight, attracted to the warmth like moths. we danced under the moon and watched the cars drive by in the almost-dark. it was wonderful collaborating with the very talented jonathan on this shoot. we all spent time chatting, claiming trees and patches of light to shoot in and spent every last second there was of light taking pictures.

moon lit desert

everyone part of our creative team always talk about road tripping across the american desert, so we decided to take matters into our own hands and find a little piece of palm springs here in sydney to shoot in one afternoon instead. we drove towards the sunset to our location and photographed well into the night. in the background, dirt bikes growled over dirt mounds, headlights from their bikes lonelily wandering in the desolate landscape in the distance. we listened to music loudly and tripped over the rugged ground more times than we could count while we were shooting under the bright moon. poor lidija had what looked like wolf claw marks on her legs, dan stepped on an ant mound and we were all attacked by mosquitos as the night settled in. i think it was all well worth it though in the end run and i can't wait for our next shoot together which we've started planning! lots of exciting things to come (not to mention some behind the scenes from this day which will be blogged soon!).

i first photographed terri in london last year while we were working on the paul edmonds campaign. while she was in sydney a few weeks ago, i just had to put something together so we could meet up and shoot again! we set out one sunny morning to shoot in a forest with beautiful colourful clothes sent to me by some wonderful brands. crossing paths again has made me miss europe so much and i can't wait to go back again very soon.

in the days of never ending sunshine and a wonderful warmth on your skin, i photographed alexandra redmond's latest jewellery collection. we took photos at the beautiful boat house on balmoral beach and as the clouds rolled over the sky and water drops started trickling in, we continued to photograph alex's brightly coloured necklaces in the rain.

legends never die

my eyes wrinkled around the edges as i looked across the field. when we played baseball together we didn't have to think or keep score, we just threw the ball and caught it with a big thud in the palm of our hands. i could feel beads of sweat dripping down my neck as we played on the dry grass under the scorching sun, we couldn't take it anymore.

we headed to the local swimming pool. the rusted fence rattled and trembled under our weight as we climbed over, metal crashing against metal and puffs of dirt flying up as our shoes hit the ground when we jumped from the top. we always came here to cool off after a game and i would always search for her. i was mesmerised by her smile, her carelessness, her summer hair. she told us legends never die.
